Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party
From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative including angels, demons, and sinister influences increasing in power within the urban setting.
Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of heroes who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.
The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).
Dividing the Cast
Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.
What Defines the Warrior Group
As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where non-violent answers are rare.
Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The antagonist then cleared his debts and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.
Character Drivers
Additionally, each member has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:
- The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
- The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a hostile place.
- Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
- However, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the party enter locations they usually can’t.
- Furthermore, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and Wicander defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.
This leaves them little choice but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.
Future Episodes
From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Explorers and Strategists groups.
Fans can expect learning which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on October 24.
